REGIONAL NIAGARA FIRE BUFF ASSOCIATION
WHO WE ARE
The Regional Niagara Fire Buff Association is a group of people from all walks of life with an interest in Fire & Emergency Services.
Some of our members are interested in recording the history of Fire and Emergency Services in Niagara as it happens, others are interested in preserving past history. Some members have an interest in the preservation and restoration of antique fire fighting equipment others have an interest in learning about and photographing the latest developments in fire fighting apparatus. All members have a common interest in supporting Emergency Responders and in sharing information about Fire and Emergency Services.
Some of our members are also members of the Ontario Fire Buff Association (OFBA), The International Fire Buffs Association (IFBA) and the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motorized Fire-fighting Apparatus in America (SPAAMFAA)
OUR HISTORY
The RNFBA was officially formed in February 1976 after meeting informally for several years. Many of the past and current members are or have been firefighters- paid and volunteer.
In October 1974 the late Doug Slack, who was a Platoon Chief with the St. Catharines Fire Department, created and published the first edition of our newsletter, the "Booster Line". The "Booster Line" is still published 10 times a year for the information of our members and subscribers.
In June of 1989 the Regional Niagara Fire Buff Association established a Fire Service Support Unit that now serves all 12 Fire Departments within the Niagara Region, The Niagara Regional Police, The Ontario Provincial Police, and virtually all of the Regional Niagara Emergency Services organizations.
In addition to involvement at the scene of an emergency the Support Units assist with fire prevention activities, training exercises and various fund raising activities.
In 1990 the RNFBA was incorporated and received status as a non-profit, charitable organization.
Meetings are held at various fire halls in the Region on the third Tuesday of the month, September to November and January to May.
Membership is available to any interested individual aged 18 or over and new members are always welcome. Prior to being accepted as a member applicants must undergo a screening process including obtaining a Police Clearance Certificate.
